  • Our most detailed space searches cannot see objects less than 33 feet wide
  • Alien artifacts may also be hidden in our oceans or dense forests
  • Study suggests other civilisations may not have noticed us yet either

The White House this week issued a statement saying there was no existing evidence that aliens had attempted to contact earth – or in fact that they even existed.

But how can the Obama administration be so sure?

The question is being asked by scientists, who say that we have not looked closely enough at outer space – and that there might be large alien greetings signs within the solar system that we simply are missing.

And they add that our deep-space probes – Nasa’s Pioneer and Voyager craft – may be equally too small for extraterrestrial civilisations to notice.

Probing the neighbours: The twin Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 probes, launched in the Seventies, carry detailed information about Earth and humanity, just in case they are recovered by alien explorers Probing the neighbours: The twin Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 probes, launched in the Seventies, carry detailed information about Earth and humanity, just in case they are recovered by alien explorers

The White House was responding to an inquiry as part of the ‘We The People’ project, which allows members of the public to submit petitions requesting government action.

One petition asked for a formal acknowledgment of ‘an extraterrestrial presence engaging the human race’.

Phil Larson, who works on policy and communications for the White House’s Office of Science & Technology Policy, replied: ‘The U.S. government has no evidence that any life exists outside our planet, or that an extraterrestrial presence has contacted or engaged any member of the human race.’

But two researchers at Penn State university beg to differ, and their paper on the subject has been accepted by Acta Astronautica and posted online on ArXiv.

The Sounds Of Earth: The ‘Golden Records’ accompanying the Voyager probes have recordings and detailed binary information about the solar system (hopefully, alien civilisations have not yet invented CDs)

Jacob Haqq-Misra, of Rock Ethics Institute, and Ravi Kumar Kopparapu, of the Earth and Environmental Systems Institute, say alien spacecraft or probes the size of a racing yacht could be floating around our solar system, and we’re blissfully unaware.

They write: ‘The vastness of space, combined with our limited searches to date, implies that any remote unpiloted exploratory probes of extraterrestrial origin would likely remain unnoticed.

‘Extraterrestrial artifacts may exist in the solar system without our knowledge, simply because we have not yet searched sufficiently. Few if any of the attempts would be capable of detecting a one- to ten-metre probe.’

Too small: Despite the detail, extraterrestrials with similar technology to ours would not be able to detect the craft carrying the Golden Record, let alone the disc itselfToo small: Despite the detail, extraterrestrials with similar technology to ours would not be able to detect the craft carrying the Golden Record, let alone the disc itself

This measurement, which correlates to between three and 33 feet, is a large enough hole to fly an alien probe through – and certainly bigger than anything we’ve sent out into space in a bid to attract extraterrestrial attention.

The Pioneer and Voyager probes sent out by Nasa in the Sixties and Seventies were all smaller than the paper’s window for error.

The Pioneer probes had plaques depicting a man and a woman, while the Voyager probes carried ‘Golden Records’ that included binary information and photographs.

‘Searches to date of the solar system are sufficiently incomplete that we cannot rule out the possibility that non-terrestrial artifacts are present and may even be observing us’

Similar-sized alien plaques and records in space would by invisible to us here on Earth.

the researchers go even further, saying that the equivalent of an alien calling card might even be hiding here on Earth.

They write: ‘The surface of the Earth is one of the few places in the solar system that has been almost completely examined at a spatial resolution of less than three feet.’

Yet they point to the ocean floor, dense jungles or deep cave as potential hiding places.

And even in the high-tech 21st century, new species, submarine features and entire rainforest civilisations are being discovered for the first time.

There’s even a chance that the probe would just look like a rock.

The researchers conclude: ‘Searches to date of the solar system are sufficiently incomplete that we cannot rule out the possibility that non-terrestrial artifacts are present and may even be observing us.

‘The completeness of our search for non-terrestrial objects will inevitably increase as we continue to explore the moon, Mars and other nearby regions of space.’

  • 2005 YU55 will be 200,000 miles away on November 8
  • Scientists have predicted it would cause a giant earthquake or a huge tsunami if it hit Earth
  • The last time a rock of a comparable size passed so close was in 1976, but it was missed by NASA

An asteroid the size of an aircraft carrier is set to pass closer to Earth than the moon – the nearest anything this big has come to our planet in 35 years.

The space rock has been classed as a ‘potentially hazardous object’ because it will shave our planet .8 lunar distances away on Tuesday, November 8.

Experts have calculated that if something of that size were to hit Earth it would cause a 4,000 megaton blast, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake, and if it hit water a 70-foot high tsunami would spread within 60 miles of the crash site.

The last time a rock this big passed so close was in 1976, but it was missed by everybody, including NASA.

NASA’s Near-Earth Object manager Don Yeomans said this week that they are to carefully study 2005 YU55, which will be 200,000 miles away, because it will give ‘clues as to what it was like when our solar system was forming.’

‘Without objects of this type, we probably wouldn’t be here,’ he added.

It will not be visible to the naked eye, but amateur astronomers could see it if they use a telescope at least 6in in diameter as it approaches from a sunward direction.

Encounters of objects this large, this close to our planet, will not happen again until 2028 when an asteroid will pass near Earth to within .6 lunar distances.

NASA will use its super-sensitive Goldstone radar antennas in California’s Mojave Desert, usually used to study quasars, as well as map planets and comets.

Scientists say they can reconstruct the shape of the asteroid with a resolution as fine as 13 feet using their instruments and plan to do similar studies at Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico.

2005 YU55 was ‘imaged’ in Puerto Rico on April 19 last year.

The data collected has allowed the Near-Earth Object Program Office at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) to refine the space rock’s orbit, enabling scientists to rule out any possibility of an Earth impact for the next 100 years.

A NASA spokesman said: ‘We hope to obtain images that should reveal a wealth of detail about the asteroid’s surface features, shape, dimensions and other physical properties.’

Barbara Wilson, a scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory added: ‘While near-Earth objects of this size have flown within a lunar distance in the past, we did not have the foreknowledge and technology to take advantage of the opportunity.

‘When it flies past, it should be a great opportunity for science instruments on the ground to get a good look.’

Peru’s Nazca Lines, the mysterious geoglyphs etched into the desert centuries ago by indigenous groups, are world famous – and now thousands of similar patterns have been found in the Middle East.

Satellite and aerial photography has revealed mysterious stone ‘wheels’ that are more numerous and older than the Nazca Lines in countries such as Syria, Saudi Arabia and Jordan.

The structures are thought to date back 2,000 years, but why they were built is baffling archaeologists and historians.

‘In Jordan alone we’ve got stone-built structures that are far more numerous than the Nazca Lines, far more extensive in the area that they cover, and far older,’ David Kennedy, a professor of classics and ancient history at the University of Western Australia, told Live Science.

I walked over them, walked past them, for centuries, millennia, without having any clear idea what the shape was.’

The local Bedouin, a nomadic people found in Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Libya, Egypt and Israel, call them the ‘works of the old men’.

They are often found on lava fields – but don’t fall into any pattern, according to Kennedy, whose research into them will be published in an upcoming issue of the Journal Of Archaeological Science.

He explains that they come in a huge variety of forms, some being ‘kites’, structures that funnelled animals, some being seemingly random meandering lines of stone and others being rectangular.

None are believed to be aligned with the stars, which has added to the mystery surrounding their purpose.

They were actually first discovered in 1927 by an RAF pilot called Lt. Percy Maitland, but it wasn’t until Professor Kennedy and his team began studying aerial and Google Earth photographs that their true extent was revealed.

A final count has yet to be completed, but Kennedy is certain they run into the thousands.

  • Researchers genetically engineered goats to produce milk packed with the same protein as silk spiders
  • The protein is then milked out and spun and weaved into a material ten times stronger than steel

It might look like a poorly drawn picture of an alien, but this is actually one of the most advanced types of skin ever made – that can even stop bullets.

Researchers genetically engineered goats to produce milk which is packed with the same protein as silk spiders.

Once this is milked out it can be spun out and weaved into a material that is ten times stronger than steel.

The fabric can then be blended with human skin to make what the scientists hope will be tough enough to stop even a bullet.

Dutch researcher Jalila Essaidi said the ‘spidersilk’ project was called ‘2.6g 329m/s’ after the weight and the velocity of a .22 calibre long rifle bullet.

Working with the Forensic Genomics Consortium in the Netherlands, she said the goal was to replace the keratin in our skin with the spider’s silk.

The first stage involves growing a layer of real skin around a sample of the bulletproof skin, which takes about five weeks.

A video posted by the researchers on YouTube shows a bullet then being fired into the mixture of the two.

Essaidi said that the project was making science fiction a reality, even if the tests results were not yet perfect.

She said that silk has a long history of using battle in combat and that Genghis Khan once issued all his horsemen with silk vests as an arrow hitting silk does not break, meaning you can tease it out.

‘Imagine a spidersilk vest, capable of catching bullets, the modern day equivalent of Genghis Khan’s arrows,’ she said.

‘Now, let’s take this one step further, why bother with a vest: imagine replacing keratin, the protein responsible for the toughness of the human skin, with this spidersilk protein.

‘This is possible by adding the silk producing genes of a spider to the gnome of a human creating a bulletproof human.

‘Science-fiction? Maybe, but we can get a feeling of what this transhumanistic idea would be like by letting a bulletproof matrix of spidersilk merge with an in vitro human skin.’

Bullet proof vests have been around for decades but skin that can stop them has only been the preserve of science fiction.

The most famous example is Superman, or the Man of Steel – bullets simply ricochet off of him.

(Seems to me just more fuel to add to the transhumanist agenda of the rise of the superman, the quest for eternal life, and the singularity of man and machine.)
